The detection of dissolved organic carbon to determine the acidification of water is another of the advances of the Center for Environmental Studies of Cienfuegos (CEAC) and the achievement is the result of strengthening the capacity of Cuban National Observatory for pollution monitoring.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) accompanies the Cienfuegos institution in such purposes.

A training was given by the expert Cesar Augusto Bernal, head of the Marine Environmental Quality Laboratory Unit (Labcam), of the Marine Environmental Quality program, belonging to the Jose Benito Vives de Andrias Marine and Coastal Research Institute (Invemar), located in the city of Santa Marta, Colombia.

The objective is to provide guidance on the procedure for the determination of dissolved inorganic carbon in samples of estuaries and seawater, and in the analytical quality controls of the variables of the carbonate system, said the master of science Miguel Gomez Batista, assistant researcher of the CEAC.

All this allows the fulfillment by the Cuban part of the development objective “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.”

Jose Benito Vives de Andrias Marine and Coastal Research Institute is a non-profit marine and coastal research organization in Colombia, linked to the Ministry of the Environment.

It carries out basic and applied research on marine ecosystems of national interest, in order to provide scientific knowledge for policy formulation, decision making and the development of plans and projects aimed at the sustainable management of resources, the recovery of the environment marine and coastal environment and the improvement of the quality of life.
