Compartir en

A third fuel tank at the Matanzas supertanker base collapsed on August 8, in the afternoon, after the second tank spilled, further compromising the situation.

It was reported on August 8, by the governor of the province, Mario Sabines, who also confirmed that the situation is quite complex, with a large fire area and three tanks on fire.

As highlighted on Twitter by the Presidency of Cuba, the governor compared the flames of this third tank to a cauldron or bonfire, with no fuel spillage.

Sabines pointed out that the large hydraulic pump has already been assembled and the equipment for launching the foam is being set up.

He pointed out that it is a priority to protect human resources, and acknowledged the work of the Firefighters Department, which has remained during the early hours of the morning working to extinguish the fire.

A containment fence is created to tank number three so that the fire does not spread if a higher fire occurs, said Susely Morfa Gonzalez, president of the provincial Defense Council in Matanzas, in a direct message on Facebook.

Morfa Gonzalez highlighted that in areas of the Fuel Commercialization Company, the workers are working hard, and praised the efforts of the colleagues from CUPET(Cuban Oil Company), the Firefighters Department, the Ministry of the Interior, and the Venezuelans and Mexicans who are providing technical assistance.

They are working hard, three helicopters are pouring water, we must have confidence in everything that the experts are doing and in the efforts of the CUPET and hydraulic resources workers in order to avoid any other type of risk, she said.

At the same time, in a tweet from the Cuban Presidency, Mario Sabines Lorenzo, vice president of the Defense Council of Matanzas province, reported that a third fuel tank collapsed after the second tank spilled, further compromising the situation.

He also stated that a large hydraulic pump has already been assembled and the equipment is being positioned to launch the foam; protecting human resources is a priority.

Mario Sabines Lorenzo, governor of the province of Matanzas, updated on the work being undertaken in the Industrial Zone of that territory to extinguish the large-scale fire at the Supertanker Base.

The firefighting teams continue clearing a path in front of the flames so that the brigades in charge of providing the foam can advance in cooling the place, which have been provided with drones because there is little visibility and accuracy is needed, Sabines explained.

He announced that about 40 trucks carrying dry material are available to contain the flames.

A command post near the site of the accident is working in shifts to monitor helicopter cameras flying over the areas at risk and drones tracking the situation.

In addition, specialists from Mexico, Venezuela and Cuba held a meeting this morning to coordinate their ideas in these crucial moments.
