Spain´s King and Queen arrived in Cuba on Monday 11, at 19:00 (GMT/UTC – 5h) on a military plane from their country. Their visit in Cuba coincides with the historical celebrations for the 500 founding anniversary of Havana.

Felipe VI and his wife, Queen Letizia, were received at Jose Marti International Airport by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez. The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, accompanies the kings.

The royal couple has planned an extensive official agenda on the island that will take them to Santiago de Cuba, about 900 kilometers east of the Cuban capital on Thursday. There the King will give a speech and pay tribute to the Spaniards killed in the Spanish-Cuban-American war of 1898.

In Castillo del Morro fortress, Felipe VI will remember Admiral Pascual Cervera and more than 300 soldiers dead in the naval battle of Santiago de Cuba. Later, Felipe and Letizia will go to the Loma de San Juan, where about 600 men died in the land battle.

On Tuesday 12, they will begin talks with the Cuban authorities after an official reception at the Palace of the Revolution. Local analysts consider the stay of the kings of Spain on the island as historic. The Cuban government has described it as excellent.

“The visit to Cuba of the Kings of Spain is a reflection of the strong ties that unite us in all spheres. In economic terms, the Iberian country is one of the main partners of our country, both in trade and in investments and cooperation”, wrote on Twitter the Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Rodrigo Malmierca.
