Poverty will be a pending issue of the presidency of Enrique Peña Nieto, especially among children, particularly for those indigenous ones, among whom eight out of 10 live today in that condition.
The national average indicates that five of every 10 Mexican minors are below the poverty line, according to a report by the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval), an autonomous body.

It indicates that data of 2016 -the most recent of the measurement of this phenomenon- reveals that 52.3 percent of children under 11 years old lived in economic deprivation, 9.7 percent of them were in extreme poverty and 42.6 in moderate poverty.

From those from 12 to 17 years old, 41.1 percent were in poverty and 7.8 in extreme poverty.

This means that there are 20.7 million children and adolescents living in homes that experience some type of poverty, a picture of childhood here where Children’s Day is celebrated today.
